A Little Organization

A year or so ago I went to the house of a family from our church. They had the neatest idea in their kitchen that I had never seen before - a magnetic spice rack! I immediately was in love. If you know me, you know I love to be organized. It was the perfect way to eliminate the clutter of all those different spice bottles - the different brands, different sizes...you know what I am talking about. Around the holidays when I did a bunch of baking and cooking I realized just how frustrating it is to not be able to find the spice you are looking for or to think you have one that in reality you don't and therefore you have to return to the craziness of Walmart. It was then that I decided that I needed to get one of those magnetic spice racks. I have seen them now all over Pinterest and it seemed like the best way. Well, I looked on Amazon and websites all over and every one I found was not exactly what I wanted and was anywhere from 60 to 100 dollars! Phew. No thank you. It was obvious if I wanted one I would have to make it myself. And that is exactly what I did. It turned out great and it cost me about $35 total! Check it out:
So how did I do it? Well the metal piece in the back is just a simple sheet of steel. My dad got it for me when I mentioned wanting to make this and he painted a finish on it in case I wanted to paint it a different color. I love the gray though! He also sanded the edges and corners so it wouldn't be sharp.

The containers I used were small tin ones I found off a webiste called Specialty Bottle (thank you to my sister-in-law Elizabeth for pinning a link to it!) These containers were the 4 oz. tin containers and were $0.75 each! I got thirty of them and it cost just over $22. Such a good deal! Here is a link to the website: http://www.specialtybottle.com/
I actually made the labels myself using Stampin' Up!'s My Digital Studio which is a digital scrapbooking program. They would be really easy to make in Word though too. I just printed them on white cardstock and then punched them out using a 1 3/4" circle punch (also from Stampin' Up! but can be found at most any craft store).

As you can see from the picture I just attached it with magnets I got at Hobby Lobby. They are 3/4" circles with 6 out of 10 strength. I thought I may have to hot glue the magnets but they are so strong they hold the containers of spices wonderfully. I used two per container to make sure they held.

I am so pleased at how it turned out and easy it was! Hopefully this will inspire you to be crafty and make something of your own to be a little more organized!
